Teaching "go to your mat" and to STAY on the mat, is something you'd have to teach, in similar manner to "stay"........slowly increasing the time, teaching the dog the staying there IS the thing you want done. It does take time, you can't rush it, but, you CAN do it. All dogs should know a "stay" cue anyway.
