Breed of the month???

I like this idea, too, but how about breed of the WEEK? At least to get started, so there's a bit of a database in the library to start off with and then, once there is a fair collection, make it a monthly event. :)

I'm also in favor of border terriers being included. ;)

I think that there should be some simple information in dot point like list (e.g. origin, group, grooming needs, etc) and then a longer paragraph or two. I also like the idea of people being able to comment on the breeds, BUT I worry about people posting, "I got bitten by breed x as a kid and now I hate them." I think there may need to be some guidelines.

Also, would members be able to contribute (good quality) photos of the breeds featured? ;)
 
How are you going to improve upon, or be different to the breed profiles already held elsewhere, such as at Pet Planet and Puppy Dog Web? I don't mean to be a killjoy, but I'm aware of how much time it's going to take you, and unless you're bringing something new to the mix, it seems that time may well be spent on just reinventing the wheel.

Just my thoughts, for what they are worth....

Well, it takes a lot of time to find all of information needed, and there's no way I could possibly do a breed every week. It would just have to build up slowly... :dogwub:
As far as people posting about personal bad experiences, let them. Most, if not all of us, would agree that no breed in itself is a "bad" dog. If they hate them, then they hate them. Oh well. They shouldn't, but they do. If they reply with something like this, then most people will either blow it off or defend the breed. I will ask that no one starts arguments if something like this arises, and if it becomes a problem then I will promptly stop the breed of the month posts. :dogsmile: And yes, people can contribute whatever they want. ^^

I don't plan on being able to "improve upon" sites such as this, as they already give a lot of information on each breed. However, if it is here on DTA, people can see an overview, sort of. If they wish to further research the breed, they are free to. I don't plan on being a walking breed history library, but I just thought it would be interesting and helpful to DTA's members. :dogsmile: You have a good point, but not everyone actually wants to go look up breeds. (I know I have visited Pet Planet, Puppy Dog Web, and Dog Breed Info numerous times, but not everyone does.) But, if they can just go to DTA like they always do and learn about the breeds here, maybe it's slightly more convenient.
 
The point of writing these articles is not to build a huge encyclopedia like the website you’ve mentioned. But instead to have a small varying library of dog breeds which touches upon the main breeds.

It’s just to make it fun to browse through without overwhelming the user with information.
 
My votes for a breed of the month is a JUG. Buddy's 1/2 Pug and 1/2 Jack Russell. Buddy has the coloring of a Pug and the body built of a Jack. He's cuddly like a pug and bouncy around like a Jack!I'm prejudice...because I just got one 3 months ago...
 
A "Jug" isn't a breed but a name given to a cross breed. I don't think it's appropriate to include them of 'breed of the month' because they're not a breed - they don't breed true.

I really like that. When I was looking into a new pup I was looking for information on different breeds. I found alot of information of "Standards" but not enough personable information. You know cute stories, what was the easiest thing to train, what was the hardest thing to train, how long did potty training take, how often do you groom your dog, how much does he/she eat, does he/she get along with other animals/children, any health issues? And I'm sorry - the picture they have representing "The Standard" how many actually look like that. I'd like to see pictures of the breed in their everyday life. That way you can capture the diva, devil or clown in their eyes.

It would be awesome to have such a source available.

Great to see another Pyr. He looks just like my Maggie and they are just about the same age. What a great, loyal, gentle pet..

I really like the idea of spotlighting different breeds. There are a lot of great breeds (like the Great Pyrenees) that get looked over because nobody knows about them. We all know and love the top 10 breeds and need to learn about the rest.
 
Australian Shepherd are very fast studying pets, and just need to be trained good patterns in advance side. They are extremely devoted and safety, and one of the few types that will let a kid take their hair or stick them without barking or being inadequate tempered.​
 
well, Androv, i think a dog who has grown up with a child can learn to tolerate children, no matter what breed he is.
and there are also a few dogs here or there, of any breed, who need much much help to learn how to be calm around children.


and lol, as best as we can protect our dog, we should try hard to teach all children how to respect a dog! of course, with super young kids and toddlers,:rolleyes: that can be like spitting in the wind....
 
I own two australian shepherds and I have to disagree with you Androv. About the kids part, that is.
Australian Shepherds are only friendly with children if they grow up with them.
Aussies are not generally people friendly dogs. They tend to bond to one person or the ones in their family. Towards strangers they tend to be reserved. And with children they can be a bit difficult, because of their herdinginstincts. As you know aussies herd differently from borders. They nip at legs and heels. Not something you would want with your kids.
And they are not as tolerant as, for instance a Golden Retriever. They will correct(snap, nip) far more quickly.
I'm not saying all aussies are like this, but I see a whole lot of aussies who don't care much for children.
No in general I wouldn't call the aussie a childfriendly dog;)
In the dutch breed discription it is mentioned that the aussie needs to be socialised with children.
