I always have to find a name I think “fits” the dog’s temperament and personality. I tend to pick names that are unique or at least less common and that I think reflect the dog’s strength, intelligence and dignity both as a playful and “cute” puppy and later as an adult. I know a long coated working German Shepherd pup named Diesel. I love this name and while black is the dominant color of his coat (and I think that is why he got this name), it soooo works for his personality! I like the names Dakota and Denver (for a male) and even though it is probably more common, I also like the name Sirus (the dog star). Finally, years ago I named my chocolate American Cocker Spaniel puppy Nestle because I thought it had both a puppy feel…kinda “cute” while still being a solid adult dog name.
I named my female husky dexter…. She loves the water and is very smart, and obviously likes blood…meat. After I named her a friend suggested she had the same eyes as Marilyn Manson even the black mascara looks also…. So she is now dexter marilyn or for short dextylyn 🙂
I prefer 2 syllable names that I would not consider to be human names. I named my first dog Loki after the Norse god and she definitely lived up to the name.
Just picked up a chocolate lab yesterday and have been getting good reviews on our name we picked out. We’re country people and love red white and blue. We decided to name the little guy “Wrangler” — inspired by the good ole Wrangler jeans! Love unique names and this one fits just right 🙂
Good choice! It’s always challenging to find the ‘right’ name for our dogs. I remember it took me a few days before I chose Chase for my Border Collie’s name.
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 My Doggy’s name is Simbo 🙂 I love him …
My latest addition is Tiamat Creatrix…Tiamat being the feminine creator of all (creatrix is the feminine of creator), from an ancient Sumerian religion. Her predecessors were Miss Dorothy Parker (the famous writer) and Gypsy Bob (as he was an escape artist).
My other two are Suzie ‘O’ who was Suzie but I changed her name a bit when she moved in with me and Baily who came prenamed Bailey.
